This linocut depicts Gikuyu and Mumbi, the legendary first ancestors of the Gikuyu tribe, along with their nine daughters (shown as smaller figures). The central tree is the Mugumo (fig tree), which is sacred in Gikuyu tradition and believed to be a place where one could communicate with the divine. The style is heavily influenced by the “Nairobi School” of printmaking.
